Abstract: This collection consists of thank-you letters written by M.A. Jinnah in August 1943 to various individuals, consuls, royals, and officials who expressed sympathy following an attack on him. Also included is a formal request from the Bombay Police for the clothes Jinnah wore during the assault as part of their investigation. The letters reflect the wide concern for his safety and his courteous, formal responses assuring well-wishers of his recovery from minor injuries.
Description: These documents capture a critical personal and political moment in M.A. Jinnah’s life following an assassination attempt in mid-1943. The collection includes multiple standardized thank-you notes sent to well-wishers such as the American Consul, the Governor of Bombay, the Nawab of Bhopal, university registrars, student societies, and municipal officials. A notable inclusion is a police memorandum requesting Jinnah’s clothing for forensic examination, indicating the seriousness of the investigation. The letters—dated between 1943 and 1945—highlight the high regard in which Jinnah was held across diplomatic, royal, academic, and public spheres during the Indian independence struggle. Together, they provide insight into the threats faced by nationalist leaders and the formal protocols of acknowledgment and investigation in colonial-era India.
