Abstract: This collection comprises eleven pages of documents detailing Hyderabad State’s constitutional strategy in June–July 1947 following the 3 June partition announcement. The Nizam’s Firman (11 June 1947) declares Hyderabad will not send representatives to either Constituent Assembly and will resume independent sovereign status upon British withdrawal. A lengthy draft letter to the Viceroy (addressed to “Yours sincerely”) proposes a treaty with the Dominion of India whereby Hyderabad would grant conduct of its External Affairs to India and contribute to defence, while reserving neutrality in any Indo-Pakistan conflict and the right to review if India secedes from the Commonwealth. The letter asserts claims to Berar (offering separate administration under a Governor appointed by the Nizam), the Northern Circars, and Ceded Territories, and demands a Customs agreement under the 1802 Commercial Treaty.
Description: Comprehensive documentation of Hyderabad State’s bid for independence and proposed treaty relationship with India, with explicit reference to seeking Jinnah’s approval of the negotiating line, revealing the Nizam’s attempt to secure Muslim League leader’s support in the final weeks before British withdrawal.
