Abstract: This collection comprises official correspondence and testimonial letters concerning Khan Bahadur Ghulam Nabi Naji and his son Ahmad Naji of Nerul, Kolaba District, Bombay State. The documents include a letter from the Governor of Bombay (February 2, 1943) thanking Khan Bahadur Ghulam Nabi Naji for generous assistance and hospitality to the Body Guard during protective duties, and a detailed testimonial (December 17, 1953) from Hasan A. Shaikh, Deputy Secretary and former Honorary General Secretary of the Bombay Provincial Muslim League, certifying Ahmad Naji's active role in protecting Muslims during the 1946 Hindu-Muslim riots, his extensive property holdings, and his subsequent migration to Pakistan as a victim of vendetta.
Description: These documents provide valuable insight into the services rendered by Muslim families in the Bombay Presidency during the turbulent years leading to Partition. The 1943 gubernatorial letter demonstrates the family's established social standing and cooperative relations with British authorities. The 1953 testimonial, written by a former office bearer of the Bombay Provincial Muslim League (the provincial arm of Jinnah's All-India Muslim League), offers detailed evidence of Muslim League activities at the district level during the 1946 riots, the persecution of Muslim landlords and activists after Partition, and their subsequent migration to Pakistan as evacuees. Together, these papers illustrate the personal costs paid by Muslim League workers and the loss of property and position they endured in the cause of Pakistan.
