Abstract: This archival file contains official correspondence from the Regional Flood Relief Committee, Dacca, dated between February and May 1956. The letters are primarily exchanged between M. Raschid (Honorary Secretary), Hon'ble Mr. Ashrafuddin Chowdhury (Minister-in-Charge of Education, Government of East Bengal), and the Commandant of H.Q. 14 Division, Dacca Cantonment. The correspondence covers three main areas: the issuance of Sanation Memos to 750 educational institutions for flood relief grants (including a special adjustment for Fakutia H.E. School as per Miss Fatima Jinnah's wishes), the financial reconciliation of a Rs. 25,000 grant provided to the military for flood-affected soldiers, and multiple requests for small amounts of money (ranging from Rs. 1 to Rs. 20) to affix Revenue Stamps on nominal rolls and complete official accounts.
Description: This collection of documentary evidence showcasing the administrative and financial operations of the Regional Flood Relief Committee in the aftermath of floods in East Bengal during 1956. The documents reveal the detailed process of distributing relief funds to over 821 schools and colleges, with special attention given to the wishes of Miss Fatima Jinnah regarding grant amounts. A significant portion of the correspondence involves H.Q. 14 Division, where a grant of Rs. 25,000 was provided for flood-affected soldiers. Multiple letters were exchanged to reconcile minor accounting discrepancies, particularly regarding missing Revenue Stamps in official records. Small amounts such as Rs. 1/1/-, Rs. 5/14/-, Rs. 14/-, and Rs. 19/14/- were requested and remitted to ensure proper documentation and stamp affixation. The file reflects the financial discipline, transparency, and administrative diligence maintained by the Relief Committee during the relief distribution process in the mid-1950s.
