Abstract: The Ration Merchants’ Union of Karachi repeatedly petitions the Director of Civil Supplies and the Food Minister (1952‑1959), arguing that the official profit margin on rationed goods is grossly inadequate. They provide detailed calculations showing losses, warn that low profits may tempt dishonesty, and demand at least 10‑12.5% net profit. In late 1953 they threaten agitation and request a conference.
Description: Letters from the Honorary General Secretary (M.D. Halek / M.D. Malek) of the Ration Merchants’ Union, Karachi, to government authorities. A 1952 letter calculates that a ration shop with 1,500 adults yields only Rs. 15/3 per month – nothing for the shopkeeper. Later letters (1953) protest a further reduction in margin, note that ration shopkeepers are mostly refugees who took up the trade 3‑4 years earlier, and demand a minimum 10% net profit. A 1959 memorandum reiterates the same grievances and refutes an official’s claim that shopkeepers earn Rs. 250/month, listing additional expenses. The union urges a conference to settle the issue.
