Abstract: This file of correspondence and administrative records from early 1949 related to the Muslim Women’s Industrial Home and the Muslim Ladies Technical & Industrial Institute in Karachi, patronised by Miss Fatima Jinnah. A letter (24 January 1949) from the Directorate of Movements and Quartering (Refugees) to Begum Mohamad Ali refers to a refugee widow, Musmat Bano, and requests the Collector of Tharparkar to arrange land and rations for her. Another letter (28 January 1949) from Begum Mohamad Ali warns Mr. Siddiqi to desist from baseless accusations against the Institute’s principal and staff, threatening legal action. A letter (28 January 1949) to the Assistant Secretary to the Administrator of Karachi clarifies that the Industrial Home does not wish to burden the government with management but requests that the primary school for refugee children be taken over by the government, and welcomes government representatives (ladies only) on the managing committee.
Description: This file contains official and administrative correspondence from early 1949 concerning the Muslim Women’s Industrial Home and the Muslim Ladies Technical & Industrial Institute in Karachi, which were established under the patronage of Miss Fatima Jinnah to rehabilitate refugee widows and destitute women. The letters cover a wide range of issues: the resettlement of a specific refugee widow (Musmat Bano), internal disputes with an employee, requests for government takeover of the attached primary school, appeals for large donations from cotton associations, a request for free soap supplies, appeals to the Quaid‑i‑Azam Relief Fund for financial aid and sewing machines, and internal administrative matters. The documents illustrate the financial struggles, administrative challenges, and fundraising efforts of these post‑Partition women’s welfare institutions. SCANNED BY: NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF PAKISTAN.
