Abstract: This file contains political and campaign documents from the 1965 presidential election in Pakistan. The first six pages consist of a sharp critique by Miss Fatima Jinnah of President Ayub Khan’s election manifesto. She accuses him of hypocrisy, noting that he has already been in power for a longer period than a normal term, yet promises reforms he failed to deliver in six years. She questions the Indus Waters Treaty, arguing that Rs. 500 crores is an inadequate price for losing permanent water rights, and warns that under similar threats he might sign away Pakistan’s sovereignty. She criticises the exploitation of the civil service for political purposes, the suppression of press and political parties, and the denial of direct adult franchise

Description: This file contains a set of documents from the 1965 presidential election campaign in Pakistan. The main document is a lengthy political statement by Miss Fatima Jinnah, in which she systematically attacks President Ayub Khan’s record and manifesto. She challenges his claims about foreign policy success, the Indus Waters Treaty, and economic stability. She calls for direct elections, freedom of the press, release of political detenues, and an end to authoritarian rule. Two letters from the railway union welcome her candidacy and request attention to labour issues. A brief note stresses adherence to principles. Most notably, page 15 contains a letter from Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the future founding leader of Bangladesh, writing as a leader of the Combined Opposition Parties in East Pakistan.
