Abstract: This file of correspondence and financial documents related to Quaid-i-Azam Mr. M.A. Jinnah’s ownership of the English daily Dawn (established as a weekly in 1941, converted to daily in 1942) and the Urdu weekly Manshoor. A bank receipt (26 July 1944) acknowledges a cheque of Rs. 22,500 credited to Jinnah’s personal account. In a letter to Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan (2 August 1944), Jinnah states that he is the sole owner and proprietor of both papers, that Liaquat had been acting as “benami” proprietor, and now appoints him as “director” with a monthly remuneration of Rs. 2,000 (effective 1 October 1943).
Description: This file contains original correspondence and financial records from 1944–1946 that establish Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as the sole owner and proprietor of the English daily Dawn and the Urdu weekly Manshoor. The letters reveal that Nawabzada Liaquat Ali Khan had been acting as a “benami” proprietor, managing the papers on Jinnah’s behalf. In August 1944, Jinnah formally clarified his ownership, appointed Liaquat as “director” with a monthly remuneration of Rs. 2,000, and promised a special power of attorney. Liaquat accepted the terms. A 1946 letter shows Liaquat seeking reimbursement for two Linotype machines purchased for Dawn at a cost of Rs. 24,050. A bank receipt from 1944 records a Rs. 22,500 credit to Jinnah’s account. SCANNED BY: NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF PAKISTAN.
