Abstract: This file contains court documents and correspondence concerning the Dawn Trust, a wakf (Islamic trust) created by Quaid-i-Azam M.A. Jinnah through a registered declaration dated 18 November 1946, of which he was the sole Mutawalli. After his death, the trust had no Mutawalli. An urgent letter (undated, likely March 1950) addressed to Miss Fatima Jinnah appeals to her as a trustee to stop the planned closure of Dawn newspaper in Karachi by Yusuf Haroon and Altaf Husain, who intended to replace it with The Herald. The core document is the judgment of the Chief Court of Sind (J. Misc. No. 23 of 1949), delivered by Justice Vellani on 13 March 1950.
Description: This file contains legal and administrative documents from 1949–1953 relating to the Dawn Trust, a wakf established by Quaid-i-Azam M.A. Jinnah. A letter to Miss Fatima Jinnah pleads for her intervention to prevent the closure of the Dawn newspaper in Karachi, which had been a key organ of the Muslim League. The central document is the judgment of the Chief Court of Sind (Justice Vellani) dated 13 March 1950, which, after considering Muslim law and precedent, appointed Miss Fatima Jinnah and Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan as Mutawallis (trustees) of the Dawn Trust. The court noted that both had agreed to serve. SCANNED BY: NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF PAKISTAN.
