Abstract: Miss Fatima Jinnah receives two bills from the Karachi Municipal Corporation: Rs. 409/8 for water supply charges (1943‑44 to 1957‑58) and Rs. 261/5 for conservancy tax (various years 1946‑1958). She writes that she took possession of the bungalow on 13 September 1948 and should only pay from that date. The Chief Assessor & Collector replies twice that taxes are recoverable from the present owner regardless of prior periods. An advocate later clarifies that the bills are actually only for 1958‑59, not arrears from 1943, and advises payment.
Description: Miss Fatima Jinnah’s letter (3 November 1958) disputes two bills covering periods before her ownership (since 13 September 1948). The Chief Assessor & Collector (13 November 1958 and 8 January 1959) insists that under municipal rules the present owner is liable for all taxes on the property. An advocate’s letter (undated) clarifies that the bills are actually for the current year 1958‑59 only, not historical arrears, and returns the papers for payment. The dispute reflects her attention to financial liabilities and the limits of municipal collection rules. SCANNED BY: NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF PAKISTAN.
