Abstract: A series of telegrams sent by Aga Khan III to Muhammad Ali Jinnah immediately before and after the creation of Pakistan. The first cable congratulates Jinnah on becoming the first Governor-General of what the Aga Khan calls "the greatest Moslem state in the world." The subsequent, lengthy telegrams offer extensive geopolitical advice, warning of Western imperialist designs on Muslim populations worldwide (in Indonesia, North Africa, the Sudan, and the Italian colonies), and urging Jinnah to appoint a high-profile representative (suggesting the Nawab of Bhopal) to secure American political and economic support for Pakistan at the United Nations and to counter Hindu economic dominance.
Description: This collection of original telegraphic correspondence provides a crucial primary source perspective on the immediate aftermath of the Partition of India. It captures the immense historical significance of Pakistan's creation for the global Muslim community, as seen by one of its leading figures. Beyond the congratulations, the documents reveal deep strategic concerns about the nascent state's future in a complex post-war world, highlighting the perceived threats from other powers and the perceived necessity of aligning with American influence for economic development and political security. Jinnah's brief, courteous reply is also included, acknowledging the receipt and importance of the communication. SCANNED BY: NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF PAKISTAN.
